1st ANNOUNCEMENT and call for papers

CHERNOBYL CATASTROPHE: ESTIMATION OF HEALTH CONSEQUENCES, ECOLOGICAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMICAL RISKS

Background

It has been more than twenty one years since the date of nuclear catastrophe of the XX century – accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant occurred. Three countries, mostly affected with radionuclide excursion from the destroyed fourth reactor of the plant – Republic of Belarus, Russian Federation and Ukraine have made tremendous efforts to overcome the effects of the catastrophe.

Hard economic conditions have been grounded for emergent governmental actions in the affected countries – annual segregation of budgets money for mitigation of humanitarian accident consequences. For all the time after the catastrophe assistance of the International Community was invaluable. Now it has appeared the necessity for qualitatively new strategy for long-term rehabilitation of the affected territories. Thereupon the UN 62-nd General Assembly proclaims the third Decade after the Chernobyl disaster (2006-2016) as a Decade of Recovery and Sustainable Development of the Affected Regions, to be focused on achieving the goal of return to normal life for the affected communities as far as it is possible within this time frame.

However, the international bitter experience of Republic of Belarus, Russian Federation and Ukraine as well as other countries that affected in the result of the Chernobyl accident, has revealed painful problems which demand the understanding:

- waste atomic energy using demand overall impartial estimation of human health effects on residents of the affected with Chernobyl radionuclides territories who have been living under unfavorable ecological conditions, as well as estimation of health of employers of atomic industry and their future generations;

- the ecological consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe and others nuclear accidents in the world cannot rate separately from spiritual, social, economical and institutional aspects;

- hiding of true information on risk underestimation is as lack of society responsibility before future generations.

The experience gained for more than 21 post-accidental years clearly defines necessity in many-dimensional estimation of various Chernobyl catastrophe risks as a global problem which demands open discussion of investigation results made by scientists in the world.

The objective of the VI International Conference

Integral estimation of the risk of consequences of a man-caused nuclear catastrophe for human health, ecology, economical and social development; determination of main Chernobyl catastrophe lessons and follow strategy of overcoming its consequences.
